Concussion

KEY POINTS

- concussion symptoms are highly variable, involves different areas of the brain, and exact recovery timelines remain difficult to predict
- medical professionals are getting much better at following guidelines; preventing return to play on the date of injury; and delaying return to participation until symptoms have properly resolved
- sustaining a concussion increased the risk of further injury in Rugby players, not just to the brain, but to the entire body
- parents and medical professionals need to consider all forms of activity in recovery from concussion, including the load on the brain with activities like study and concentration. Delay return to full participation until the concussed person has sufficiently improved to avoid prolonged concussion recovery
- the newly published 6th edition of the Sports Concussion Assessment Tool is currently the best evidence tool to screen for a concussion injury in the sports environment.  This tool should only be used by trained and qualified Healthcare Professionals
