Ankle Sprains

KEY POINTS

- ankle sprains are one of the most common types of injuries, with an incidence as high as 7 sprains for every 1000 "sports exposures", 2 million ankle sprains in the U.S. annually, a rate of up to 26 ankle sprains per 1000 person, & with 50% of ankle sprains presenting to U.S. emergency departments being non-sports related (Herzog et al, 2019)
- proper rehabilitation and criteria based return to play is effective for reducing the risk of re-occurrence and reduced risk of chronic ankle instability
 - rehabilitation should include: avoiding further harm, restoring normal joint mobility, improving balance, joint awareness & postural control; restoring muscle strength; addressing altered movement patterns; and sport/activity specific rehabilitaiton
