Evidence Informed Physiotherapy

Hamstrings

KEY POINTS

- the hamstring muscle group are the most frequently reported muscle injury in many sports.  A 20-year study of UEFA footballers found that 20% of players missed training and/or matches every season. 18% of hamstring injuries were reoccurring injuries; and 69% of reoccurances happen in the first two months after injury
- the hamstrings are vulnerable to both stretching forces (lunging/kicking/landing) and sprinting forces (acceleration & high speed running)
- correct diagnosis of both the severity (grade) and the location (facia/muscle/tendon) of the injury is important for proper rehabilitation
- there is excellent evidence for hamstring lengthening exercises and eccentric strengthening exercises to be included and progressively loaded during both rehabilitation, and as a hamstring injury prevention strategy
