Hand Injuries

KEY POINTS

- hand injuries are often complex, and require an individual tailored approach
- the hand has many small bones & joints, tendons, intrinsic (within the hand) & extrinsic (outside the hand) muscles controlling movement
- the hand is also rich in nerves & nerve endings, with large areas of the brain devoted to movement control and sensory inputs from the hand
- injury prevention in the workplace and at in the home is vital
- following injury, regaining movement from all the small joints in the hand, regaining movement control, grip & muscle strength, and sensory feedback is important for all aspects of daily life and quality of life
