Headaches

KEY POINTS

- there are many different types and causes of headaches
- unfortunately, the location of the headache alone is not enough information to inform a diagnosis of the type of headaches that a person is experiencing
- there are several types (or sources) of headache that physiotherapy can be very help.  This includes: neck (cervicogenic) headaches, tension headaches, jaw (TMJ) headaches, muscular referred (trigger point) headaches, and some types of migraines
- upper cervical spine dysfunction is a frequent source of headache
- physiotherapy treatment for headaches may include: assessment of the headache type; cervical joint mobilization and/or manipulation; soft tissue massage & trigger point treatment; dry needling; muscle stretching; neck & thoracic spine strengthening; and assistance with management of any life-style factors that may contribute the person's pain experience
