Evidence Informed Physiotherapy
Knee Pain & Running
KEY POINTS
- forces at the knee and patellofemoral joints are influenced by many factors - both intrinsic (within the body) and extrinsic (environmental loading)
- hip strength is just as (and sometimes more) important to increase to help reduce pain in the front of the knee
- although running can sometimes be painful, there are demonstrated health benefits to running, including evidence that regular running reduces the risk of knee osteoarthritis
- there are many interventions that improve pain and function in the knee. Individuals with osteoarthritis should consider implementing them prior to opting for surgery
