KEY POINTS
- return to play is a goal of all sport physiotherapy rehabilitation plans
- different frameworks exist - some are sport specific, some a specific to the injury type
- risks to the health of the athlete are the primary concern. Activity risk factors and risk tolerance also need to be evaluated and considered in decision making
- return to play is a collaborative decision shared by the athlete, medical professional(s), coaches, trainers/conditioning staff and also the parents in the case of children
- on return to play, proper sports specific warm-ups and athlete specific injury-prevention plans are vital to keep the athlete participating in their sport
