Evidence Informed Physiotherapy
The Shoulder
KEY POINTS
- the shoulder joint complex is a co-operation of 4 related joints that move together to accomplish combined movement with a high degree of motion
- control-based muscle groups work together to provide dynamic stability whilst performing full range and strong movements of the shoulder
- in assessment of shoulder pain, a range of clinical tests are best combined to identify joint based, control based, or strength based deficits that are contributing to a shoulder being painful
- regaining good muscle control of the shoulder joint is important for resolving shoulder pain - some studies suggest that supervised exercised-based shoulder exercises achieve the same level of benefit as some shoulder surgeries
