Evidence Informed Physiotherapy

Warm-up & Injury Prevention

KEY POINTS

- a systematic review on warm-ups demonstrated that proper warm-ups reduce the risk of injury by a median of 36%, with some individual studies showing a reduction in injury rates by more than 50% (Ding et al, 2022)
- a comprehensive warm-up strategy can include range of motion/stretching, strengthening, balance exercises, activity/sports-specific drills, agility and landing techniques
- warm-ups are not just for athletes, a warm-up for everyday life and tasks can also reduce injury risk, and improve task performance
- doing warm-up type strength, balance & power exercises at non-sporting times can also improve performance and reduce the risk of injury during sport
